Snippet #7

Snippet #7

He eyed the woman warily, his wide, black eyes shifting back and forth. Not unlike the pendulum of the cuckoo clock his old aunt had adored so. The same one that he had accidentally cracked, the one that had earned him his life on the cold London streets. It was then he had learned not to trust adults. They had golden tongues, spinning lie after lie from those coal black hearts. The woman gestured to the morsel, holding it out to him in the palm of her gloved hand. Slowly, cautiously he took it from her. Giving it a sniff to ensure it was not poisoned. He never took his eyes from her, slowly he tasted of the coin smiling at the sweetness of the morsel as all distrust fled his young soul.
